“Since the family is grieving, we did not summon Nikki’s sister for questioning. She was in the apartment when Sahil arrived on February 10. Nikki’s train to Goa was to depart from Nizamuddin railway station at 7.30am. She probably asked Sahil to accompany her to Goa, but he couldn’t get a ticket,” said a police officer who has knowledge of the investigation. The cops recovered Nikki’s travel bag from near the refrigerator in which her body had been stashed by Sahil.
Love, murder and marriage, all in one day: Nikki Yadav’s killing shocks Delhi
A Delhi court sent Sahil, 24, a resident of Mitraon village in southwest Delhi, to five-day police custody on Wednesday. Police told the court that he was accused of strangling Nikki to death, stuffing her body into a refrigerator at his eatery in his village and then marrying another woman later in the day.
Sahil is believed to have told police that after reaching Nizamuddin from Nikki’s apartment in southwest Delhi and failing to get a ticket to Goa, the two headed for Anand Vihar ISBT intending to visit the hills instead. But since the buses for their destination left from Kashmere Gate, the two drove there.
The officer said, “Sahil reached Kashmere Gate around 9am. His mother was calling him regularly after he went missing from home when there were various ceremonies lined up for his wedding. While driving to Kashmere Gate, the couple had a fight and Sahil strangled Nikki. He then left for his dhaba via Paschim Vihar, reaching there around noon. He hurriedly dumped the body in the fridge, threw the girl’s luggage and rushed home to get married in 6-8 hours’ time.” The car in which the accused allegedly killed his partner belonged to his cousin.
CCTV: Is this the last time when Nikki Yadav was seen alive?
The investigators had earlier said that Sahil claimed to have murdered Nikki after midnight on February 10, but on interrogation it became clear he had killed her in the morning that day. He disclosed that he reached Nikki’s apartment at 1.30am on February 10 and stayed there till around 6am before leaving for Nizamuddin. Nikki’s younger sister too was present in the house when Sahil reached there. The cops said the sister is doing an MBA course from a private university and often visited Nikki.
Police will take Sahil on a drive to reconstruct the route he took on the fateful day.
The murder has not only ruined the life of Nikki’s family, but also the families of Sahil and Trisha (name changed), the woman he married after allegedly committing the murder. On Wednesday, Nikki’s kin, including her father Sunil Yadav, reached the mortuary at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital to receive her body for the final rites.
The preliminary autopsy report revealed that Nikki was strangled to death. No other injury marks were seen on her body. The body was taken to the family’s village in Jhajjar, Haryana, where the cremation was held on Wednesday evening. The father said, “She was an intelligent girl and we demand capital punishment for the accused.”
At Sahil’s house in Mitraon, the doors were locked, though the string lights put up for his wedding still hung there. His parents were not present when TOI reached the house. Neighbours said they had not seen the parents since Tuesday morning. “We saw Sahil leaving in the car late at night after his engagement party on February 9. We thought he was going out with friends as part of his wedding celebrations,” said a local.
A lane resident said Sahil was the only child of his parents, who were very simple people. “Sahil too was warm and never misbehaved with anyone. He had opened his dhaba around three weeks ago,” he revealed.
Sahil’s uncle, who lives close by, said the murder was the last thing the villagers wanted to hear about. TOI also contacted Trisha’s family, but they refused to make any comments. The dhaba with the fridge, meanwhile, was the centre of attention on Wednesday, with numerous people stopping by to catch a glimpse of the notorious site.
