Although the league has had an odd year, all three teams improved their already strong records on Saturday. With an impressive road victory over Baylor, Oklahoma State demonstrated that its high ranking was well-deserved. Kansas shocked Iowa State by relying on its defence. TCU’s victory over Oklahoma was possibly the weekend’s most resounding triumph. We should be in for an exciting conclusion down the stretch because none of the unbeaten teams still in the Big 12 have won an outright conference championship in the previous ten years.
Clemson: In an outstanding 30-20 victory over No. 10 NC State, No. 5 Clemson’s quarterback DJ Uiagalelei demonstrated that his impressive performance against Wake Forest was no fluke. Uiagalelei led the Clemson running game with 73 yards and three total touchdowns while throwing for 209 yards. He was cautious and appears to be developing a close bond with tight end Jake Briningstool. Clemson has a chance to return to the College Football Playoff if Uiagalelei can maintain this level of play.
Losers
Wisconsin: The Badgers’ season is officially over following a humiliating 34-10 loss to Illinois, dropping them to 1-3. The rush for Wisconsin was two yards. Two! Despite Illinois’ excellent defence, 208 total yards against a Big Ten West opponent is insufficient. The future of the schedule is now in doubt after such a crushing defeat against Illinois. The Badgers might not play in a bowl game. Can they withstand the long drives to Michigan State, Iowa, and Nebraska? What do they do? It falls well short of the standards Madisonians have learned to hold themselves to when they are barely competing for bowl eligibility.
Washington: I’ve been praising Washington for the majority of the season, but the schedule is beginning to look questionable. The Michigan State triumph no longer seems significant or like the landmark victory it was at the time. As of publication, Stanford had never defeated an FBS team. It’s difficult to forget the Huskies losing 40-16 at the Rose Bowl, despite the fact that UCLA is a solid team and should climb into the top 15 after thrashing Washington. Even though Washington is no longer the Pac-12 competitor we anticipated, it is still a charming story.
