Champion Bruhat Soma and Other Finalists Experience a Once-in-a-Lifetime Visit to the White House

Date: May 31, 2024

Washington, D.C., USA – Champion Bruhat Soma, the Indian-American champion of the Scripps National Spelling Bee, along with seven other finalists, was invited to the White House for a visit, providing these young talents with a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Bruhat, a 12-year-old seventh-grader from Florida, won the prestigious Scripps National Spelling Bee on Thursday, taking home more than $50,000 in cash and other prizes. He spelled 30 words in 90 seconds on Thursday night, with the judges confirming that he had spelled 29 of them correctly – nine more than his rival Faizan Zaki.

On Friday, the White House invited him to an event on the South Lawn, where President Joe Biden welcomed the Kansas City Chiefs to celebrate their championship season and victory in Super Bowl LVIII.

Among them were four Indian-Americans: Rishabh Saha, 14, and Shrey Parikh, 12, from California, Aditi Muthukumar, 13, from Colorado, and Ananya Rao Prasanna from North Carolina.

While Bruhat did not meet the President, he did meet other champions — the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs. All the finalists were seen taking pictures on the White House lawn and were thrilled to visit the office-cum-residence of the U.S. President.
